Photoresist materials are organic compounds whose chemical properties change when exposed to UV light due to breaking of chemical bonds. Photoresist are known to be light sensitive material that is used in the manufacture of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) and microelectrochemical systems (MEMS). Photoengraving and Photoresist form a patterned coating in the photoresist film. Photoresist are primarily used in the manufacture of integrated circuits and flat panel displays. Photoresist can be positive or negative. Positive photoresist is soluble when exposed to UV light, whereas it is vice versa in the case of negative photoresist. This light sensitive material is applied to the wafer surface treated with HMDS, an adhesion promoter to ensure proper adhesion of photoresist to the wafer substrate.

The various chemicals used include poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), phenol formaldehyde resin (DNQ/ Novolac), Poly (methyl glutarimide) (PMGI) AND SU8. These chemicals are applied as liquid and spin coated to apply the chemical uniformly. PMMA is a multipurpose polymeric material suitable for many non-imaging and imaging microelectronic applications. PMMA is widely used as a bonding adhesive, covering for wafer thickening, and as sacrificial layer. It is most commonly applicable as high resolution positive resist for X-ray and deep UV microlithographic processes. Phenol formaldehyde resins are synthetic polymers obtained by reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. Phenol resins are majorly used in manufacturing circuit boards. PMGI resists enable high yield, metal lift-off processing in various applications ranging from data storage to MEMS. SU8 is used as an epoxy based negative photoresist. It was designed as a photoresist for the microelectronic industry to offer high resolution cover for fabrication of semiconductor devices.

Some of the major application areas of photoresist include lithographic processes that include wide range of processes and tools. Other applications include fabrication of printed circuit boards, microelectronics, sand carving and patterning and etching of substrates. The aspects of photoresist technology are absorption at UV and shorter wavelength and electron beam exposure.
